As you might know, Android has been making a huge escalation recently, coming strong with quick updates, and a wide variety of phones. I noticed that 50 percent of searches involve the word “Droid”, so I made this post to try and clarify those searches. Update: just to clarify, these are only Android phones that Verizon offer which are part of the Droid lineup. There are many other phones on other carriers in Canada and the US, and Verizon has Android phones that are not part of the Droid lineup.
Firstly, the word Droid originates from one of the biggest carrier’s in the US’s new line of android phones. They call these phones Droid’s (short for Android), and there is a wide variety. Firstly, there is the original Droid. This one was the first Droid released by Verizon, and it’s the flagship Droid. Made by Motorola, the smartphone has a hard keyboard, 3.7 inch screen, and runs vanilla Android. The Droid recently received an OTA update to 2.2, unlike the Milestone. You could get this phone in Canada as the Milestone on Telus.
Next, the Droid Eris, by HTC, was released on the same day as the Droid, but its slightly lower-end. Featuring HTC Sense, a 5mp camera, 3.2inch screen, most other smartphone features, the phone was fairly nice. The Droid Eris received an OTA update to 2.1 a few months ago. The phone doesn’t look like it, but it has the exact same specifications as the HTC Hero on Telus, and the HTC Magic+ on Rogers (except these phones still run Android 1.5).

Verizon quickly updated the Droid line of phones, as they released the Droid Incredible by HTC. Also featuring HTC Sense, a 1ghz processor made it the fastest phone on their lineup, as well as the fastest sellin phone. The 3.7″ screen, Android 2.1, topographic design, and Sense made it sell out in hours, and the shortage still continues due to AMOLED screen shortages around the world. The Droid Incredible recently got an OTA update to Android 2.2. Although it doesn’t look like the same phone, the HTC Desire on Telus has the same specifications, and a sexier design.
At the beginning of the summer, Motorola and Verizon released the Droid X. Featuring a 4.3″ screen, the Droid X is a megaphone. Android 2.2 with a new, upgraded version of MotoBLUR, an 8mp camera, 720p video capture, and much more make this phone amazing. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no news on when or if Canada will receive a phone equivalent to the Droid X.

The latest addition to Verizon’s Droid family is the Droid 2. Less than a year after being released, the Droid is already obsolete, so it was in need of a major upgrade. Fixing most of it’s original issues, and making it quicker the Droid 2 is Verizon’s new flagship phone. The keyboard is now much better, a 1ghz processor is an upgrade from the 600mhz one on the original Droid, a sleeker design, and an R2-D2 version (which isn’t available yet) bring this phone up to date with devices like the Nexus One, and other superphones available. The Droid 2 also runs the same updated version of MotoBLUR seen on the Droid X.
